For the last 6 years Zebra Uno has worked in partnership with Light House and University of Wolverhampton in coordinating the renowned annual International Deaf Film and TV Festival Deaffest. The UK’s leading Deaf-led festival celebrates the talents of deaf filmmakers and media artists from all over the world.

Deaffest 2012 was a successful weekend, with lots of people enjoying themselves with films ranging from light-hearted comedies such as Still Here (Louis Neethling), romantics such as The Allotment (Sebastiana Mazzocchio) to compelling documentaries such as The Third Brigade. Entertainment included Def Motion, John Smith, Visual Vernacular and Millie Dollar.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the Keep Clam and Carry on Signing Deaf party that was held in the courtyard at the Light House. Performances at the Deaf party included Visual Vernacular acts leading by Ishtiaq Hussian, with the audience coming up on stage to try for themselves, and stunning burlesque from Millie Dollar and 1950’s swing dancing from Def Motion.

The winner of the Ben Steiner Film Bursary 2012 is Ted Evans – we wish him many congratulations!

We’re also delighted to share that Film Alone which was directed by Braidwood School for Deaf and Deansfield Community school has won the Young Deaffest 2012 award – well done to the schools!
