DPDC Halloween Event at Bantock House Museum

It was a trick and treat magical event for many Deaf children at the weekend as Zebra Uno sponsored the latest Deaf Parent Deaf Children event held at Bantock House Museum. The spooky and ghostly event had Zebra’s staff rushed off their feet entertaining a total of 23 children aged 4 months to 13 years. There was Halloween themed face painting, storytelling from our very own Zebra Uno’s Co-Director Marilyn Willrich, who was dressed head to toe in a gruesome witch outfit, and a range of games and activities to entertain the children from dawn till dust.

While the children were under our Deaf witch’s spell, parents were able to relax and enjoy the workshops delivered by DPDC with interpreting and note-taking provided by the Zebra staff.

The day was opened to parents and children from all around the UK and was a great potion of success. Parents were able to come together, discuss issues and problems they have faced and share their experiences with one another.

The little monsters had a scarily fun day and, due to unfortunate good behaviour, they were treated to goody bags and Halloween cupcakes made by Zebra Uno’s interpreter Jemma Whitehouse.

The use of British Sign Language was used throughout the day by both children and adults, which in turn created a positive atmosphere. The children benefited from older Deaf role model, who empowered them to use their own language.

Zebra Uno believe it is vital for DPDC parents to know that they have an equal voice for their children. This event really captured the important of parents being able to share their experiences and know they are not alone. The whole day was catered to making a significant difference for many DPDC families and we are delighted by the day’s success.

Zebra Uno hopes to see DPDC grow from strength to strength in the years to come.
