DFIG Conference 2017

An event took place recently at the University of Wolverhampton on 15^th February 2017 – the DFIG (Deaf Studies, Foundation and Interpreting) conference where Director Marilyn Willrich gave a talk about Zebra Uno, Zebra Access and Deaffest.

The DFIG conference formed part of UoW’s Career Development Week (CDW) giving students opportunities to attend events, build new skills and add value to their CV. For Deaf Studies and Interpreting students, that inevitably involved meeting Deaf scholars, entrepreneurs and representatives of regional Deaf organisations.

The mixture of international (Dr Annelise Kusters), and national (Kate Rowley PhD student) Deaf scholars and national interpreting scholar (Dr Vicky Crawley) gave students a chance to watch presentations and engage in workshops about cutting-edge research.

Also, the mixture of regional entrepreneurs, including Marilyn Willrich, gave students exposure to an inside understanding of events such as Deaffest and other volunteer opportunities which bring Deaf Studies and Interpreting ‘alive’.

The university is committed to CDW next year and has their thinking-caps on to build on this event by opening up the experience to regional Deaf community members and interpreters for CPD. We look forward to it!
