BSL video by HM Government

We are delighted with the recent announcement that British Sign Language (BSL) is recognised as a language in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Back in 2003, BSL was recognised as an official language by the UK Government but was not legally protected.

Instigated by Labour MP Rosie Cooper, the Bill passed at the third reading in the House of Lords on Wednesday 27th April 2022.  The Bill then received Royal Assent on Thursday 28th April, becoming a law, entitled the BSL Act 2022.

We look forward to seeing what the future will bring from the BSL Act, especially in terms of improvements in accessibility and equal rights for all.

Well done to everybody involved in making this happen after years of campaigning.
