Young Deaf Film Bursary’s winners create their Film Productions

Zebra kick starts the year with the creation of new Film and Animation productions from their bursary winners; Brown Solid Productions, Purely Platonic Productions and 3 Point Production.

The World Today is a Brown Solid Production, which sees the first Deaf led comedy sketch. This debut production demonstrates the writing, directing and acting skills of Deaf trio Brian Duffy, whose first acting appearance was in 2007, where he played a key role in the Actcess production ‘The Guest’ which was nominated by Best British Short Film at Deaffest 2007. Simon Herdman, who has experience in film production and acting, and David Sands who has had a number of leading roles in television, theatre and film. His first appearance was at the age of 17 in See Hear’s short film Granddad, for which he won ‘Best Actor’ at Remark! TV and Film Awards.



The Tape is a Purely Platonic Production, which tells the story of David and Beth whose lives are turned upside down by a sordid affair. An action packed, love affair thriller that will keep you in suspense. This production was written, directed and edited by David Hay, who was the lead actor in the prestigious, award-winning film ‘Coming Out’ which has had both national and international coverage. Stephen Collins who has experience directing films and acting, and Shana Grummitt who has worked as a BBC Television presenter.



Near Fatal Attraction is a 3 Point Production where the use of modern technology creates a near miss disaster. A controversial and comical animation that will leave you laughing and pondering. This production is produced, directed and edited by Sebastiana Mazzocchio, her vast experience in the world of media granted her success with the creation of both film and animation productions. Frazer Cockles who has experience with Information Technology and Hayley Shelton who is a talented artist.

Creative Christmas at Bantock House

Deaf Young Film Bursary

Zebra’s Film bursary winners began preparations for their new films, which will be produced in the New Year and showcased on the 13 March at the Light House.The winners were:

Deaffest

Zebra Uno Director Nikki Stratton coordinated the Deaffest 2007, the national and international Film and TV Festival. There was a record attendance and a sell out Gala Awards Night.

Zebra’s other director Marilyn Bueno Del Carpio co-hosted the event with John Hay from Wolverhampton University. She also acted in one of the films nominated for Best Short British Film, ‘The Guest’ produced and directed by Pierce Starre and Bim Ajadi.

The awards were presented by Steve Chapman from Screen West Midlands, Rachel Basiktar Channel 4 presenter and Julian Peedle-Calloo BBC Producer and presenter.

The young Deaf Filmmakers films made from the Zebra project were showcased at Young Deaffest and bursaries awarded to the team to create more films.

The event was organised by Zebra-Uno, Light House and University of Wolverhampton with in-kind support and sponsored by Screen West Midlands, UK Film Council, Wolverhampton City Council, Media Box, AC2.com and Skillset.

Deaf Young Filmmakers

The Deaf young filmmakers project devised and organised by Zebra Uno has produced innovative films and animations of a high standard. The participants were able to develop their creative, practical and cooperative skills by writing, filming and editing their own projects with tuition and mentoring from Zebra Uno and Light House. The films, animations and footage of the project can be seen online at:
