Deaffest coordinator Marcella Stratton flies out to Hong Kong!

February 2010

Chief Executive of the Centre for Cultural Development and proposed Festival coordinator Mok Chiu Yu invites our very own Deaffest co-ordinator Marcella Stratton to discuss how to support their First ever Deaf Film Festival, which hopes to be held in September this year.

With funding from ‘Connections through Culture’ China, Marcella Stratton flew out to Hong Kong for a period of 10 days providing advice and consultations on ways to create a Film festival dedicated to Deaf filmmakers and media practitioners.

Marcella gave a presentation about the prestigious UK Film Festival Deaffest, which inspired and encouraged the Hong Kong team and gave ideas of what a film festival may involve. After that, a selection of Deaf films from the UK were screened to an audience of over 150 Deaf and hearing individuals.
As part of her visit there, Marcella had a number of meetings with Mok Chiu Yu and visited the Agnes B Cinema, the proposed venue for the film festival. Marcella also had the privilege of visiting local Deaf communities and networking with a number of organisations such as;
• Hong Kong Sign Language Association
• Hong Kong Association of the Deaf
• Hong Kong Federation for the Deaf (Vice President - Wong Moon Chung)
• Hong Kong School of the Deaf Alumni Association
• Hong Kong Sports Association of the Deaf (Director - Tse Wong Po Yee, Louise)

In her own words, ‘Hong Kong was an amazing experience. I gained a valuable insight into China’s arts and cultures. The opportunity to liaise with aspiring Deaf filmmakers and the main organisers has given me the confidence to continue a working relationship regarding their first Film Festival and any other projects.’
